The Ask: “What would a world that DOESN'T revolve around racial DIVISION look like?”

Skills

Analyzation

Using the analytical skills I've acquired during my classes to look into the societal norms and use my own observations and prior knowledge to come up with an alternative universe that combats the social constraints that we have had throughout history.

Creative Problem Solving

I used my creative PROBLEM-SOLVING skills to think of different ways i could interpret a world where people thought of themselves as one, where there WAS NO racial division. I wanted to challenge myself to see if i could personify that idea.

Visual Story Telling

With my prior study of world art history, I learned a lot about the use of expression and color to tell a story without using words.

Research

Used MY RESEARCH SKILLS TO LOOK INTO THE HISTORY OF RACIAL DIVISON TO GET A CLEAER VIEW OF WHAT AN OPPOSITE WORLD WOULD LOOK LIKE WITHOUT IT. i ALSO LOOKED INTO PSYCHOLOGICAL CASE STUDIES THAT GO INTO THE MINDSET OF SOCIETY FOR THE NEED TO DIVIDE PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR APPEARANCE, RATHER THAN TO AGREE THAT WE ARE ALL THE SAME SPECIES.

Color Theory

I planned for the art project to be very spunky, especially with color, so I used my prior knowledge of color theory to map out the color theme of the project. I even went as far AS to see if there were some COMPLEMENTARY colors that i would switch out and see if i altered the tint or tone of the original color, would it work with the color i wanted to pair it with.

Project Management

To keep myself on track, I set a timeline and due dates for each picture to be done. I have over 13 pictures to make so keeping everything organized and flowing was highly important for me.

Thought Process

This art project is MEANT to debunk the ongoing debate on who is the superior race or why there needs to be a divide and hatred towards ONE race and another.

Brain Storming

This art project came to me based on the current state of the world. I’ve always questioned the distain and hatred that some people felt towards others based on the way that they looked. I sat down and started scribbling, and the pieces began to come together. Here’s some elements that I thought of while brainstorming:

  • OTHERWORLDLY yet still human enough for people to understand

  • Supernova (The creation of a planet from an exploding star)

  • Avatar (The blue humanoid alien movie franchise)

  • Pop art

  • Andy Warhol (ARTISTIC Inspiration)

  • Takashi Murikami (ARTISTIC Inspiration)

  • Pop Art

  • cULTURAL aWARENESS AND aPPRECIATION

The Labor

The supplies I’m using for this project consist of:

  • twelve 14”x 14” square canvases

  • a 42”x 42” rectangle canvas

  • Acrylic paint

  • Number 2 pencil

My PAINTING process:

  • Sketch the figure

  • Tke pictures just to make sure the composition is right (I use my camera to help me get a BETTER perspective because it can show things that I might not be able to see with the naked eye)

  • CLEan the canvas sketch of any imperfections

  • Bursh the canvas off of any erasing shavings

  • Outline the skin first (I start with the skin first since that’s the PORTION that i want to have the most even flat color)

  • Color in the hair (side note: all their hair will be BLACK. there will be some extra details added for each individual based on the AESTHETIC i give them)

  • Facial Features

  • Small details on the figure

  • Paint the background

  • Let the paint dry

  • Spray paiting with an a glossy finish acrylic sealer

The Layout

I’m a visual thinker, so for me to begin to paint, I had to write down exactly what I wanted to do and draw what i wanted to see. I began by sketching the layout of the project. In the picture to the left, I drew a total of 13 boxes, which symbolize 13 canvases that I was going to use to paint. The 12 surrounding the 1 big canvas are going to be individual people that are all going to have the following details:

  • Blue skin

  • Different facial features

  • Different hair textures

  • Different expressions

  • One eye covered with a STARBURST or supernova

  • The background is going to be red for contrast and to give the pictures the pop it needs

For the 1 big canvas in the middle, it will consist of a big supernova/star which will represent the zygote; The cell that is formed when an egg is fertilized.

Outcome

tHIS IS JUST ONE OF THE MULTIPLE BLUE HUMANS I WILL BE MAKING. This is an ongoing project, so As I go along with the project, I will be updating this portfolio
